Biography

Juan Figueroa Y Hernandez was born around 1906 in Lomas, Naranjito, Puerto Rico to Raminta (or Canuta) Hernandez and Cruz Figueroa, who worked as a field hand on a coffee planation.^[1] The Felicita in the census is much too old to be his mother, but must be his grandmother, and other records name his mother as Raminta or Canuta. ^[2]

Around 1931 Juan Figueroa, working as a tobacco farm hand, met Alejandra Diaz and in 1935 they were living in Lomas, Naranjito, Puerto Rico with their two children, Rosa and Carmen.^[3] Their daughter Angela died within hours of her birth on 12 December, 1935.^[4] Their daughter Zoraida was the informant on Juan's death certificate so must have been born sometime after 1935, since she doesn't appear on the 1935 Puerto Rican Social Population Schedules and lived at least until 1974.^[5][6] Alejandra died on 28 December 1998 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.^[7]

According to his death certificate, Juan worked as a porter until 1970. He had a heart attack in 1969 and died on 13 February 1974 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico of acute pulmonary edema due to heart disease.^[8]

1920 US Census - Juan Figueroa Y Hernandez, Age 8 , is enumerated in the household of his father, Cruz Figueroa, a farm hand on a coffee plantation, his mother Raminta Hernandez, Age 28; and his grandmother Felicita Figueroa, Age 60.

1935 Social and Population Schedules - Juan Figueroa Y Hernandez, Age 27, is enumerated as head of household with his common law wife, Alejandra Diaz, Age 20; and their children Rosa, Age 3; and Carmen, Age 1.
